This Gochujang Tofu is a quick, flavorful dish made with simple ingredients and bold Korean-inspired flavors. Spicy, savory, and comforting, it’s an easy recipe that might just change the way you think about tofu.
There’s something incredibly comforting about this Gochujang Tofu — spicy, savory, and deeply satisfying, yet made with the simplest ingredients. This is one of those recipes that proves tofu can be anything but boring. It’s quick, flavorful, and perfect for busy days when you still want something warm and nourishing on the table.
I still remember how much I used to love watching Korean dramas — curled up on the couch, completely immersed in the story, and always distracted by the food scenes. This dish is inspired by those moments. Every time I make this gochujang tofu, it reminds me of the cozy feeling of watching a drama episode and craving something spicy and comforting straight from the screen.
WHY YOU WILL LOVE THIS RECIPE
Super Easy to Make: Simple ingredients and straightforward steps — perfect for beginners or busy weeknights.
Big Flavor, Minimal Effort: Gochujang brings that bold, spicy-sweet depth that instantly transforms tofu.
Comforting & Satisfying: Warm, saucy, and deeply comforting — perfect with rice or noodles.
A New Way to Love Tofu: Even if you think tofu is bland, this recipe might just change your mind.
SIMPLE INGREDIENTS, INCREDIBLE FLAVORS
The magic of this dish lies in the sauce. Gochujang creates a rich base that’s spicy, slightly sweet, and packed with umami. As the tofu cooks, it absorbs all that flavor beautifully, turning soft and tender on the inside while being perfectly coated on the outside.
What I love most about this recipe is how fast it comes together. In just minutes, you’ll have a dish that looks and tastes like something you’d order at a cozy Korean restaurant — but made right at home.
INGREDIENTS
Firm or Extra Firm Tofu: This kind of Tofu is perfect for frying and stir-fry. It will also stay in shape.
Green Onions – or called Spring Onions. This is great for garnishing at the end. It adds beautiful green color and it is rich in healthy nutrients.
Vegetable Oil – I love using this for frying. I normally use Rapeseed Oil. You can also try Sunflower Oil. Do not use Olive Oil.
GOCHUJANG SAUCE
Gochujang – This is the most popular Korean Spicy Sauce. It has a bold sweet, spicy, and umami flavor. I like to use it for different recipes. You can find it in your local Asian grocery store. These days, many regular grocery stores sell this too. Vegan option is also available.
Light Soy Sauce – This is one of the must-have Asian sauces that you need to have in your kitchen. Lee Kum Kee is my favorite brand for this. You can use other brands too.
Sesame Seeds – use the roasted kind. I also love this for garnishing the dish.
Sesame Oil – It adds a unique flavor to the dish. We love to use this to add additional aroma to the dish in Asian cooking.
Cornstarch – Cornstarch is widely used in Asian cooking. It is also called corn flour.
Honey – Any kind of Honey should work. You can substitute honey with white sugar or brown sugar.
Chili Flakes – This adds a bit extra spicy tang. If you want to tune down the spiciness, you can skip this.
Water – use room temperature or cold water.
HOW TO MAKE THIS GOCHUJANG TOFU
Prepare the Tofu – Remove the Tofu from the package and strain out excess water. Pat the Tofu dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Slice Tofu into thick rectangles and set them aside.
Prepare the Gochujang Sauce – In a small bowl, combine together Gochujang, Sesame Seeds, Light Soy Sauce, Sesame Oil, Cornstarch, Honey, Chili Flakes, and Water. Mix until Gochujang dissolves. Set aside.
Fry the Tofu – In a frying pan, add in Vegetable Oil, on medium-high heat. Fry the Tofu in batches on both sides until golden brown, about 5 minutes on each side.
Assemble the dish – Add back all the Tofu pieces in the pan, then add in the pre-made Gochujang Sauce to cover the Tofu and simmer to thicken the sauce. About 2 minutes. Toss everything well. Sprinkle chopped Green Onions on top.
Ready to serve – Remove to serving plate. Garnish with more chopped Green Onions. Serve hot and ready to enjoy!
