There are some recipes that prove healthy eating never has to be boring, and this Healthy Sautéed Shrimp and Broccoli with Garlic Sauce (蒜蓉西兰花炒虾) is one of them. It is fresh, colorful, and packed with simple ingredients that come together in less than 30 minutes. Whenever I want a quick homemade dinner that feels both nourishing and satisfying, this is one of the recipes I always come back to.
Growing up, shrimp was always one of my favorite ingredients. I loved its naturally sweet, juicy flavor and how beautifully it paired with fresh vegetables. Combined with crisp broccoli and a fragrant garlic sauce, this dish reminds me that the simplest recipes are often the most comforting. Every bite is light yet full of flavor, making it perfect for both busy weeknights and relaxed family dinners.
What I love most about this recipe is that it doesn’t require complicated ingredients or special cooking skills. With just a handful of everyday pantry staples, you can create a restaurant-quality Chinese shrimp and broccoli stir-fry right at home. The savory garlic sauce lightly coats every shrimp and broccoli floret, creating a meal that is healthy, delicious, and incredibly satisfying.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS SHRIMP BROCCOLI RECIPE

WHY SHRIMP AND BROCCOLI ARE THE PERFECT PAIR
Shrimp and broccoli are a classic combination in Chinese cooking for good reason. The tender, naturally sweet shrimp perfectly balances the fresh, slightly crisp texture of broccoli. Together they create a healthy meal that is rich in flavor without feeling heavy.
I always recommend using large or extra-large shrimp for this recipe because they stay juicy and give every bite a satisfying texture. If possible, buy shrimp with the shells on and peel them just before cooking for the freshest flavor.
THE SECRET IS THE GARLIC SAUCE
The star of this recipe is the simple garlic sauce. Fresh garlic adds an incredible aroma that pairs beautifully with shrimp, while soy sauce, oyster sauce, and a touch of cornstarch create a silky sauce that lightly coats every ingredient.
Cornstarch is a common ingredient in Chinese cooking because it helps create that glossy restaurant-style sauce without making it too heavy. It brings everything together while allowing the natural sweetness of the shrimp and freshness of the broccoli to shine.
If you love garlic as much as I do, don’t be afraid to use a few extra cloves. The garlic becomes wonderfully fragrant as it cooks and gives the entire dish its signature flavor.

Healthy Sauteed Shrimp and Broccoli with Garlic Sauce
Ingredients
- 10 Large or Extra-Large Shrimp
- 400 g / 14 oz Broccoli (cut in pieces)
- 6 Garlic Cloves, minced (Half for the Sauce, Half for cooking the Shrimp)
- 3 Green Onions (White+Light Green Parts, Sliced)
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1/4 tsp Ground Black Pepper
- 2 tbsp Cornstarch
- 2 tbsp Light Soy Sauce
- 1/2 Cup Fresh Water (125 ml)
- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
- 1 tbsp Vegetable Oil
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix Shrimp, Salt, and Ground Black Pepper together. Set aside.
- Prepare the Garlic Sauce. In another bowl or a measuring cup, mix well half of the Garlic, Green Onions, Soy Sauce, Sesame Oil, Cornstarch, and Water.
- In a wok, bring the water to a high boil, add the Broccoli, and boil for 2-3 minutes. Remove Broccoli and set aside.
- Clean the wok, add the Vegetable oil, at a medium heat, add the rest of the Garlic, stir for a few seconds, then add the Shrimp, and cook for 3-4 minutes, until the Shrimp turn pink and curve.
- Turn the heat to high, add the Broccoli and mix gently with the Shrimp. Then add the Garlic Sauce, coat thoroughly for about 2 minutes. Ready to serve!
Notes
- Don’t overcook the broccoli or the shrimp. Blanch the broccoli just until it turns bright green and stays crisp, as it will continue cooking with the shrimp. The same goes for the shrimp—cook only until they turn pink and tender to keep them juicy and flavorful.
- Use fresh garlic whenever possible. Fresh garlic gives the sauce its rich aroma and delicious flavor, making a big difference compared to garlic powder.
- Cook until the sauce lightly coats the shrimp and broccoli. Once most of the liquid has reduced and the glossy garlic sauce clings beautifully to every piece, your dish is ready to serve.
- Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles for a simple, healthy, and satisfying homemade meal.
