INGREDIENTS
MARINADE
Chinese Cooking Wineย โ This is also commonly used in marinating meat in Asian cooking.
Light Soy Sauceย โ This is normally used in marinade as well, which helps enhances the flavor.
Egg Whiteย โ This is a secret in Asian cooking when it comes to marinating meat.
HONEY LEMON SAUCE
Honeyย โ This is must-have for the Honey Sauce. Any kind of Honey should work.
Lemon โ You will need a whole fresh lemon, which you will use both the zest and the juice.
OTHER INGREDIENTS
Chicken Leg Meatย โ I love the juicy chicken leg meat for this recipe. You can also use chicken thighs or breast.
All-purpose Flourย โ This is the most commonly used type of flour, a mid-strength, medium-gluten flour, which normally has 10 to 12 percent of protein.
Cornstarchย โ We use this to coat the chicken and to make the starch water. Cornstarch is widely used in Asian cooking. It is also called corn flour.
Vegetable Oilย โ I love using this for frying. I normally use Rapeseed Oil. Do not use Olive Oil.
Green Onionsย โ or called Spring Onions. This is great for garnishing the dish at the end.
Sesame Seedsย โ use the roasted kind. I also love this for garnishing the dish.
Water โ We need some water to make the starch water.
HOW TO MAKE THIS CHINESE HONEY LEMON CHICKEN:
1. Marinate the Chicken โ In a bowl, mix together Chicken, Chinese Cooking Wine, Light Soy Sauce, and Egg White. Set aside to marinate for 10-15 minutes.
2. Make the Honey Lemon Sauce โ In a small saucepan, add in Honey, Lemon Zest, and Lemon Juice over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook for 1 minute. Then add in the Starch Water. Stir well until the sauce thickens up. Remove from heat and set aside.
3. Coat the Chicken with Flour โ In another large bowl, add in All-purpose Flour and Cornstarch, mix well. Then add in the marinated Chicken. Use your hands to mix well the flour and the chicken to create an uneven coating. Shake off extra flour.
4. Fry the Chicken โ In a wok, add in enough Vegetable Oil for the Chicken pieces to float, over medium-high heat. Add the Chicken pieces one at a time into the hot oil. Fry the Chicken in batches. Cook for 3-4 minutes until golden and cooked through. Drain on paper towel or a wire rack. Repeat the same procedure.
5. Mix the Chicken with the Sauce โ While the Chicken is still warm, place them in a large bowl. Add the Honey Lemon Sauce. Toss everything well. Sprinkle over some roasted Sesame Seeds. Toss again.
6. Ready to enjoy โ Transfer to a plate. Garnish with some chopped Green Onions. Ready to enjoy!
HAINIโS TIPS
โ Adjust the sauce to your preferred thicknessย โ after adding the starch water, you can cook the honey lemon sauce a little longer for a thicker consistency or keep it lighter if you prefer. Keep in mind that the sauce will continue to thicken slightly as it cools. โ Use fresh lemon juice and zestย โ for the best flavor, always use fresh lemon instead of bottled juice. It makes a big difference in creating that bright, vibrant taste. โ Fry the chicken in batchesย โ avoid overcrowding the pan, as this helps maintain the oil temperature and ensures the chicken turns out evenly crispy. โ Watch the color while fryingย โ keep a close eye on the chicken as it cooks and look for a golden brown color. This helps you achieve the perfect crisp without overcooking or burning.
This Chinese Crispy Honey Lemon Chicken is one of those recipes youโll find yourself craving again and again. Itโs comforting, vibrant, and just indulgent enough to feel like a treat โ whether youโre sharing it with loved ones or enjoying a quiet moment to yourself.
I hope you enjoy making this dish as much as I do. And when you take that first bite โ crispy, juicy, sweet, and tangy all at once โ I hope it brings you that same little moment of happiness. Donโt be surprised if this becomes one of your go-to favorites. Happy cooking!ย
FAQS
How do I keep honey lemon chicken crispy after adding the sauce?
For the best texture, make sure the chicken is fried until golden and crispy before tossing it in the sauce. Add the sauce just before serving and gently coat the chicken instead of soaking it, so it keeps that light crunch.
Can I use bottled lemon juice instead of fresh lemon?
You can, but fresh lemon juice and zest are highly recommended for the best flavor. Fresh lemon gives a brighter, more natural sweetness and tanginess that really makes the dish stand out.
Can I make honey lemon chicken ahead of time?
This dish is best enjoyed fresh for maximum crispiness. If you need to prepare ahead, you can fry the chicken in advance and reheat it in the oven or air fryer, then toss it in the sauce just before serving.
