Chinese Crispy Honey Prawns are finger-licking good! It tastes crispy, sweet, and juicy with amazing honey flavor. The recipe is also simple and easy to make.
Chinese Crispy Honey Prawns are one of my childhood favourites. My parents used to take me to eat Honey Prawns in Chinese restaurants in Guangzhou. I fell in love with this dish at first try. The sweet, crispy, and juicy Honey Prawns is so addictive and makes you crave for more. It is hard to stop eating once started.
I have re-created my memory version of restaurant-style Chinese Crispy Honey Prawns. Each bite is sensational with wonderful honey flavor. The recipe is also simple and easy to make. If you are a fan of honey flavor like me, you are welcome to check out my Chinese Honey Chicken and Korean Honey Butter Fried Chicken recipes.
FRIED RICE NOODLES
For a restaurant experience, I also fried some Vermicelli Rice Noodles for decoration on the serving plate. In this case, you have to use Rice Noodles for the amazing effect. And it only takes 3 seconds in the hot oil. The result looks like a beautiful flower. The fried Rice Noodles is mainly for decoration and not for eating. If you are curious, it actually tastes like crispy chips but without any flavor.
INGREDIENTS
Shrimpย โ Always use large shrimp for satisfying bites. The shrimp should be peeled and deveined.
Green Onionsย โ or called Spring Onions. This is great for garnishing at the end. It adds beautiful green color and it is rich in healthy nutrients.
Vegetable Oilย โ I love using this for frying. I normally use Rapeseed Oil. You can also try Sunflower Oil. Do not use Olive Oil.
Sesame Seedsย โ use the roasted kind. I also love this for garnishing the dish.
MARINADE
Chinese Cooking Wineย โ I normally use Shaoxing Wine. This is widely used in Chinese cooking. You should be able to find this in most Asian grocery stores.
Salt – It adds savory flavor and helps the moisture from the marinade get thoroughly absorbed into all parts of the Shrimp.ย
Egg Whiteย โ This is a secret in Asian cooking when it comes to marinating meat.
THE FLOUR MIXTURE
All-purpose Flourย โ This is the most commonly used type of flour, a mid-strength, medium-gluten flour, which normally has 10 to 12 percent of protein.
Cornstarchย โ Cornstarch is widely used in Asian cooking. It is also called corn flour. We also use this to make the starch water.
Baking Powder – It helps to increase the crispiness of the Shrimp when frying.
THE HONEY SAUCE
Chicken Bouillonย โ You can easily buy this in regular grocery store. In Denmark, this is sold in cubes in a package.
Light Soy Sauceย โ This is one of the must-have Asian sauces that you need to have in your kitchen. Lee Kum Kee is my favorite brand for this.
Brown Sugarย โ I prefer this better to regular White Sugar. If you donโt have Brown Sugar, you can use White Sugar.
Honeyย โ This is must-have for the Honey Sauce. Any kind of Honey should work.
Waterย โ It helps the consistency of the sauce.
STARCH WATER
Cornstarchย + Water – This helps thicken up the sauce when cooking.
