This Chinese Fried Tofu Recipe is not only easy to make, but it tastes absolutely Yum! Tofu was one of my favorite childhood dishes. It still is. I always love Tofu particularly for it’s softness. I am a big fan of beans-related food. Tofu is actually bean curd.
Tofu originates in Anhui province, China. The history of Tofu dates back to Han Dynasty some 2,000 years ago. Since then, Tofu has spread across Asia and become an important part of regional food culture.
There are so many ways to cook Tofu. I have decided on one of the easiest ways. You can always adjust to your own taste by increasing or decreasing the amount of salt and number of peppers.
WHY TOFU IS GOOD FOR YOU?
Tofu is not only healthy but also tastes delicious. It is low in calories, high in iron, while containing a relatively large amount of protein.
WHAT KIND OF TOFU SHOULD YOU USE?
For this Chinese Fried Tofu recipe, I highly recommend that you use a Firm Tofu, because they are less fragile than other kinds. You can see the label on the package when you purchase Tofu in your supermarkets. If you buy your Tofu in a market, ask the vendor for Firm or Hard Tofu which is good for frying.

- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tbsp Light Soy Sauce

- 3 tbsp Cornstarch Slurry – 1 tbsp Cornstarch with 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
Instructions
- Cut the Tofu in 1.5 cm (1 inch) rectangular sizes, mince the Garlic, and cut the Green Onions in two different sizes.
- Heat the Oil in a frying pan or wok to medium-high, be sure to add 1/2 tsp of Salt, and fry the Tofu for about 5 minutes on one size.
- Flip the Tofu over, be sure to add another 1/2 tsp of Salt, and fry another 5 minutes.
- Remove the Tofu from the wok and set aside.
- Reheat the wok to high, add 2 tbsp of Oil. Add minced Garlic, Soy Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Dark Soy Sauce, Sugar, and some fresh water, cook for about 10 seconds. Add the Tofu and mix well.
- Add the Onions (reserving the green pieces for garnish) and Cornstarch Slurry into the Tofu mixture. Cook for 1 minute until coated well. Before serving, add the Green Onions for garnish.
Notes
- Always remember to add a little salt on both sides when you are frying the Tofu (as highlighted in the recipe)! This is essential to the taste of the Tofu. Otherwise, you might find them a bit plain even though you have added other sauces.

- Use Firm Tofu for this recipe. Do not use Silken Tofu.
